Schenectady Hispanic Heritage Committee is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on a city wide basis; to provide scholarships to deserving college bound Latino students and to honor worthy Latinos in the Capital Region.
Each year various events are planned to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month in Schenectady. In the past we have held “Informational Sessions at the YMCA and Schenectady High School. These sessions provided information on such topics as immigration, English as a second language, employment and much more. We have also hosted the Hispanic Veterans Ceremony at the Latino Parade and at Schenectady County Community College. Each year we have held a celebration of Latino culture and music in Schenectady’s Central Park. The final event each year is “Una Noche Elegante” a scholarship and awards Banquet. The theme for SHHC introductory year was “Latinos in Education”; Maria Neira first vice-president of New York State United Teacher was our keynote speaker and award recipient along with Kenney Figuroa, Schenectady City Police Officer and our own “El Presidente: Carlos Caraballo.
In 2009 Nancy Hernandez, Town of Colonie town board member was our keynote speaker for our theme “Latinos in Politics; in 2010 with a theme of “Latinos in Entertainment” Laudelina Martinez of the Martinez Gallery delivered our keynote address. In the past SHHC has honored; Juan George of Latina magazine, Michael Asencio president of Albany’s Latin Fest , John Lajas formerly of Too Deep Entertainment and Maritza Martinez and Dr. Jose Cruz both of SUNY Albany. Scholarship recipients have included Sebesany Rios, Santiago Montoya, Shakira Hernandez and Lewis Camillo. Yolanda Vega and Pedro Perez have supported this wonderful group as Maters of Ceremony and music has been provided by Alex Torres and his Latin Band and Sensemaya.
In addition to scholarships three awards are presented; The Unsung Hero, The Entrepreneurial and the Rising Star. This year SHHC continues its tradition of celebrating Latino people, culture and history with a theme of” Latinos in America.” The SHHC board is made up of a small but dedicated group of individuals committed to fully celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin people and Latin culture.
